Jim Penney started to earn his own money when he was eight years old. His father taught him not only to work hard but also to live by the Golden Rule, doing to others as hewould have others do to him. This principle stayed to him when started clerking in the goodsstore in Colorado. Because of his hardwork and honesty he became a trusted clerk whereever he was employed. He changed jobs several times because of dishonest employers, but he finally put himself up to have his own store. Gradually he opened more stores. People trusted Jim Penney because he always treated them as he would like to be treated.
Because Jim lived by the Golden Rule, he did not realize that he was a sinner and needed a Savior. They his wife died after they had been married only eleven years. In his sorrow, he turned to Jesus Christ and received His salvation. He understood then that living by the Golden Rule was not enough--he needed Jesus just as everyone did.
In 1929, when Jim Penney was fifty-six years old, he lost his money in the great financial crash. Sick and in despair, he was ready to give up when he heard the song, "GodWill Take Care of You." Believing this thought to be true, Jim Penney took courage and trusted God to help him out of his difficulties.
The many J. C. Penney stores in US tell us that God did indeed help him. J.C. Penney also helped others rise above their financial ruin. After all, he was practicing the Golden Rule.
